Very efficient search algorithms :-)

I am guessing that they use prefix tree algorithmns and data structures and
cache as much of the prefix tree as possible in memory of 64 bit OSs.

FYI....I was listening to CNET radio the other day and the founders of
google were on it. They denied to tell the algorithm they would use for
searching etc. but they did mention its their proprietary database, not the
traditional ones (like an RDBMS)

Thats' what I thought. All this talk about indexes and multi server
architecture doesn't really tell the whole story. I'm sure there's
something more going on here. What other type of databases are there?
RDMS, OLAP, that's the extent of my knowledge. There is a whole theory
of database architecture that I'm sure the average DBA knows nothing
about.

Try
'The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine':
http://www7.scu.edu.au/programme/fullpapers/1921/com1921.htm

It's the original Google research paper and gives a good flavour of why
these things are so FAST.

...and very fast dB architectures. Check out Adabas D from Software AG
(www.softwareag.com), the World's Fastest mainframe dB engine...

My money says google is running their algo's with hooks into this engine.
