 Blobs/Multimedia

Hi,

We recently upgraded to DB2 UDB/Win2000 to version 7.2 and some code I
had for
uploading images to DB2 finally worked - a catharsis for me!
Has anyone had any experience with uploading and serving any of the
typical
media/multimedia LOB/BLOB types from DB2?  I would like to try a range
of things, from mp3 and real audio to avi, etc.  This would be via ASP
pages
using ADO and IIS server.  Since the facilities now seem to be there,
I am hell-bent on trying this...just because it can be....and I think
such would be
good for our DBAs as well...."Use the Power, Luke..."

Any good thoughts and ideas/hints/gotchas welcome.  Our DBAs seem
enthusiastic
about this little progress we have made, and we need to explore these
new-found
DB2 capabilities and learn to make the most of them!

thanks,

Phil J.

I have successfully implemented blob based storage for various types of
attachments - PDF, Video, PPT and a host of other custom file formats.

The input path is through manual upload or an "export" utility from Lotus
Notes Domino.Doc databases.

The download is using the browsers' inbuilt mechanism of mime type and
length. I have a java servlet that takes the primary key of the Db2 record,
reads from the blob, based on the characteristics, sets the mime type and
content lenth params and sends the data out.

As expected, very large files (our current application limit is 12 MB, fixed
arbitrarily based on the largest file we had at that time) take a while to
open or save.

If the client plug-in has streaming capability, the user does not experience
the delay. For example, adobe acrobat reader can stream the content, if the
original PDF files are created using the "Fast Web Access" option set.
