A "database" is started the first time a connection is made or when you do the ACTIVATE database command.

A "database" is stopped when there are no longer any connections to that database and/or you do a DEACTIVATE.

A "database instance" is started by issuing the command db2start, and stopped with db2stop

See the Command Reference for more details on the above.

Which platform?  From any command line, you can issue:
db2start
db2admin start
db2stop
db2admin stop

These can be part of start up on paltforms like OS/2 and NT.

What if an instance has more than one database and you want to
prevent connections to only one of them?  db2stop doesn't
discriminate between databases.  AIX 4.2.1, UDB 5.2, fp9.

Connect to the database in exclusive mode:

db2 connect to sample in exclusive mode

Blair,

I tried that but it didn't prevent other connections, but it
did prevent an offline dump, one of the tasks I'm interested
in doing.  I want to turn off a database and point the clients
to a replica while maintenance is performed. I have other
databases on the instance so I can't use db2stop.  I'm
modifying my clients to connect to one or the other or both,
but I was hoping for a server based solution.

Tom

Hi,

You can create another instance wich works as a kind of router instance.
Catalog the real instances as local nodes and catalog the database you
want them to connect to.
You can stop this instance if you don't want them to connect to any
database or point them to your replica if that one is available.

Kind regards, Gert van der Kooij
